Services

Portobello Eyecare offers the full range of optical care, from vision and eye health checks through to dispensing high-quality ophthalmic eyewear and lenses.

Comprehensive Eye Tests

Everyone needs to have regular eye checks, whether you’re 4 or 104. Not only can we make sure your vision is 20/20 or 6/6 here in the UK, but we can look at your eye health. Your eyes can indicate signs of high blood pressure, glaucoma, diabetes and much more. And, for peace of mind, an eyesight can also show when everything is working as it should. Should your vision require corrective lenses, Rudi, will help you find the frames to suit you and your budget, or will advise on the best type of lenses to correct your vision.

Spectacles

We stock a wide range of frames from many brands across the globe and we can help you find the frames that best suit you, your lenses and your budget. We offer a range of lens coatings, including anti-scratch, anti-reflective, special tints and more. We can arrange for bifocals or varifocals, prescription sunglasses and spare pairs. What we won’t do is pressure you into having a certain pair of frames or a particular lens finish – we want you to have the glasses you want, not the most expensive or unnecessary second pair. The choice really is yours!

Lenses

As an independent optician, we have access to all major lens manufacturers products. Our catalogue of options for you is vast, but don't worry, our experienced team will be on hand to make sure you make the right choice

Contact Lenses

Contact lenses can give you a whole new outlook. There are so many variations of lenses out there and we will help guide you to the type that most suit your eye shape, health and prescription. Even if you have tried them in the past and not liked them, talk to us about the different options now available. We will always make sure you know how to insert them properly, look after them and offer aftercare appointments to see how you’re getting on.

Myopia Control

Myopia today represents a global health crisis, with five billion people, or half of the world’s population, expected to be myopic by 2050. It can progress rapidly in children and may lead to sight-threatening eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment and macular degeneration later in life.

When detected early, myopia control solutions can help in slowing down its progression in children, reducing such risks and ensuring a better quality of life.

The Stellest™ lens now available from Portobello Eyecare has been designed with an exclusive and pioneering technology called “H.A.L.T.” technology (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target) by Essilor’s industry-leading research and development teams. It is the culmination of more than 30 years of academic studies, product design, rigorous research efforts, and collaborating with the top research institutes and myopia experts.

The Stellest™ lens provides myopia correction and sharp far vision through a single vision zone and myopia control through H.A.L.T.* technology. The H.A.L.T.* technology consists of a constellation of aspherical lenslets spread on 11 rings and was designed to create for the first time, a volume of signal that slows down the elongation of the eye. The power on each ring has been ingeniously determined to guarantee a volume of signal always in front of the retina and following its shape, to achieve consistent myopia slowdown.

The ongoing state-of-the-art three-year clinical trial on 167 myopic children started in 2018 in Essilor’s joint Research and Development Center with its key partner, the Wenzhou Medical University, in China.

The results of this study demonstrate compelling evidence that Essilor Stellest™ lenses are one of the most effective options available for slowing down myopia progression in children today

Coloured Overlays

Scientific research has shown that the use of coloured filters on spectacles or coloured overlays laid over text can help some children and adults to read better. The coloured overlays help to reduce the perceptual distortions of text which can sometimes be reported

Symptoms described may be as follows:

  • movement of print
  • blurring of print
  • letters changing shape or size
  • letters fading or becoming darker
  • patterns appearing, sometimes describes as 'worms' or 'rivers' running through print
  • illusions of colour – blobs of colour on the page or colours surrounding letters or words
  • rapid tiring
  • headache or eyestrain
  • oversensitivity to light.

Or if you are observing a child, you may notice them:

  • moving closer to or away from page
  • becoming restless
  • using their finger as a marker
  • skipping words and lines
  • rubbing their eyes and blinking excessively
  • being reluctant to read
  • having a short concentration span when reading.

If you are concerned about any of this, pop in or call Portobello Eyecare for advice.
